O-asaji Group

What does O–asaji mean?

“O–asaji” refers to something done in the morning with respect and reverence …

“O” is an honorific. “asa” means morning. “ji” means thing.

… it implies a “Buddhist service in the morning.”

A typical Sunday morning schedule:

The O-asaji Group meets on most Sundays prior to the 10:00 am service.

8:00 am
Group members take turn in being responsible for arranging the altar. Other members arrive before 8:30.

8:30 am
A group member rings the Kansho bell followed by meditation for 15 minutes.

8:45 am
The Reverend teaches the chanting of a new sutra and/or chanting techniques are practiced for approximately 30 minutes.

In addition to meditation and chanting, the techniques of ringing the Kansho bell and arranging the O–naijin (altar) are learned. Also, chanting with the Reverend on the O–naijin during a Sunday service is another experience to encounter (in the absence of the Reverend, the O–asaji group conducts the chanting for Sunday services).

The O–asaji group welcomes anyone who is interested in Buddhist chanting, exploring Jodo Shinshu practice or observing. Please contact the Temple office (650-964-9426) or Reverend Dean Koyama.
