Amida
A contraction of the Sanskrit Amitayus and Amitabha. Infinite Life and Infinite Light. Professor Inagaki describes Amida as a transcandental Buddha as opposed to the historical Buddha. In the legend of Amida it says that Amida was previously a king. When he met a Buddha, called Lokesvararaja, he too wished to become like him. He renounced the world and became known as Dharmakara. He made 48 vows and performed many practices to fulfill the vows. After many aeons of time and a multitude of practices, his vows were fulfilled and he became the Buddha of infinite life and light, "Amida."
Buddha
An enlightened being. One who has awakened to the truth. The term is usually associated with Shakamuni Buddha, the historical Buddha, but also is used for anyone who is enlightened.
Dharma
Literally meaning Law or Truth. This term refers to the Buddha's Teachings.
Shotsuki Hoyo
A monthly memorial held at the temple for those families whose loved ones have died that particular month. The memorial is held on the first Thursday of each month.
